Corpus Christi Hooks News Release

SPRINGDALE, Ark. - Mario Santiago blanked Corpus Christi over 6.2 innings and Paulo Orlando homered and knocked in a pair of runs as Northwest Arkansas topped the Hooks 6-3 Sunday night at Arvest Ballpark.

The club's 10th consecutive loss leaves Corpus Christi 0-9 in the second half and 36-43 overall.

Santiago (6-6) allowed just one single over the first five innings and finished with four hits surrendered during his economical 71-pitch effort. He struck out five.

The Naturals steadily built a meaty lead against the Hooks and starter Douglas Arguello. The first two runs came courtesy of solo home runs by Orlando (2nd inning) and Clint Robinson (3rd).

Arguello (7-4) had given up just one homer in his first 16 starts this season. The last time the southpaw allowed two home runs in the same game was August 3, 2008, when, as a pitcher for Salem in the Carolina League, Arguello served up two gopher balls in a game against Kinston.

The home club doubled its advantage in the fifth. Mike Moustakas provided an RBI double and later scored on a single to center by Orlando.

Trailing 5-0, the Hooks wedged their way onto the scoreboard in the eighth. Jhon Florentino doubled inside the right field line with the bases loaded and one out, plating Jonathon Fixler and Marcos Cabral for a 5-2 score. The double extended Florentino's hitting streak to nine games.

Arguello lost for the first time since May 5. He was charged with four earned runs on five hits and a couple of walks over six innings. The lefty fanned five and also hit two batters.

The two clubs go at it again Monday night at 7:05. Henry Villar (1-4) gets his first start of the year for the Hooks, matched against Blake Johnson (1-1).

Notes: Second baseman Jose Vallejo, in his second start for the Hooks, knocked in his first run of the year with a two-out single in the ninth.

Right fielder Jon Gaston collected his league-leading 14th outfield assist in the eighth. Gaston fielded a single off the bat of Moustakas and fired home to catcher Jonathon Fixler, who tagged out Johnny Giavotella attempting to score on the play from second.

The game postponed Saturday in Tulsa because of rain will be made up as part of a doubleheader at Whataburger Field this Friday, July 9. The Hooks and Drillers will play two seven-innings games, with the first slated to begin at 5:05 p.m.
