Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
SPRINGFIELD, MO - The Cardinals became the first club to sweep Corpus Christi this year, fashioning a 1-0 victory over the Hooks Tuesday night at Hammons Field.
Springfield (7-5, 37-45) outscored Corpus Christi (5-7, 53-29) by four runs in the series following walk-off wins Sunday and Monday.
Cards right-hander Andrew Morales (4-4) left the game with two away in the sixth after being struck in the left arm by a line drive off the bat of Jack Mayfield. Ronnie Shaban was plucked from the Springfield bullpen and netted a strikeout to end the inning, stranding two on base.
Shaban retired all seven men he faced before giving way to Kyle Barraclough, who employed a double play in the ninth to help garner his sixth save.
Springfield's run came in the third off Ruben Alaniz. Charlie Tilson worked a walk and later scored via a two-out single by Jonathan Rodriguez. The inning ended when Patrick Wisdom was thrown out at home plate by the second baseman, Mayfield, on an attempted double steal.
Hooks left fielder Jon Kemmer slammed the door in the second, gunning down Derek Gibson who was trying to score on a David Washington base hit.
Alaniz (1-1) worked around nine hits in seven innings. He stranded six on base, including Aledmys Diaz and Wisdom who notched a one-out double and triple, respectively, over the Cards' final two turns at bat.
Mayfield accounted for half of Corpus Christi's hits, going 4-for-4 in his Double-A debut.
Astros reliever Chad Qualls made a rehab start for the Hooks, tossing a perfect first inning. Qualls, recovering from a pinched nerve in his neck, threw six of nine pitches for strikes.
Corpus Christi aims to end its three-game slide Wednesday night. Lefty Brian Holmes (3-2, 2.50) faces Tulsa right-hander Ross Stripling (1-2, 5.54). First pitch 7:05 at Whataburger Field.
