San Antonio Missions News Release

A terrific outing by starter James Needy guided San Antonio to a 2-0 win over Springfield in Wednesday night's series opener at Wolff Stadium.

Wednesday featured a classic Wolff Stadium pitchers' duel between Needy and Springfield's Arturo Reyes.

Needy, who was making his first start with the club since arriving from Triple-A El Paso, looked very comfortable back on the hill in San Antonio. The 6'6 right-hander allowed just four hits and no walks, while striking out three in seven shutout innings. Needy, a Texas League Mid and Post-Season All Star for San Antonio in 2014, threw 57 of his 83 pitches for strikes.

For awhile Wednesday, it appeared Needy (1-0) might have to settle for a no-decision, because Reyes was sharp as well. The 23-year-old right-hander allowed five hits through four, but kept the Missions off the board.

In the fifth, however, Reyes made the game's first mistake. Catcher Griff Erickson led off the frame with a single, his second of the game. After Reyes (5-4) retired both of the next two batters, shortstop Jose Rondon gave San Antonio a 1-0 lead when he ripped a triple into right. It was Rondon's third hit of the night, his most at the Double-A level.

Diego Goris led off the bottom of the eighth with a homer down the left-field line off reliever Ryan Sherriff to cap scoring.

Relievers Brandon Alger and Tayron Guerrero (ninth save) each tossed perfect innings to complete San Antonio's eighth shutout of the season. The victory snapped the club's three-game losing streak.

San Antonio (5-7, 36-46) resumes its three-game series with Springfield (7-6, 37-46) Thursday on Cricket Dollar Night presented by News 4 San Antonio. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM. Bryan Rodriguez (4-9, 4.39) will get the ball for the Missions, while the Cardinals counter with fellow righty Thomas Lee (7-3, 4.41).

Notes: Rondon (3-for-4) extended his hitting streak to nine games. The three hits were one shy of his career high.
