Spokane Chiefs News Release
Kamloops, B.C. - The Spokane Chiefs played the B.C. Division-leading Kamloops Blazers to the brink on Wednesday night in Kamloops, falling 4-2. Forward Luke Toporowski extended his point streak to six games with a third-period goal to make it a one-goal game late.
The Blazers struck first as defenseman Max Martin drove the net and chipped in his ninth of the season off a perfect feed from Connor Zary.
The power play goal stood for just over two minutes before the Chiefs evened it with a score of their own with the man advantage. Toronto Maple Leafs prospect Filip Kral ripped one home from the slot on a 5-on-3 chance to tie the game up headed into the first intermission.
Kamloops made it 2-1 after two with another power play tally as Brodi Stuart scored from in tight. They made it 3-1 early in the third as Josh Pillar found the back of the net off a nice set-up from Quinn Schmiemann.
Spokane cut the deficit in half at 6:31 of the third as Toporowski punched in a goal in third-straight game and 15th of the year overall. Rookie forward Bear Hughes and team-leading scorer Adam Beckman picked up assists.
That was as close as Spokane would get before the Blazers slid in an empty-netter late to seal the win. The Chiefs are now 1-2-0-0 against the Blazers this season, with the fourth and final matchup slated for March 10 at Spokane Arena.
Spokane was outshot 40-32, finishing 1-for-4 on the power play and 4-for-6 on the penalty kill.
Lukas Parik started in goal, making 36 saves while Kamloops' Dylan Garand turned away 30 shots.
