Traverse City Pit Spitters News Release
Traverse City, MI - The Traverse City Pit Spitters inched closer to the postseason with a 9-5 win over the Kalamazoo Growlers on a rainy Sunday, sweeping the weekend series.
The Pit Spitters won the season series 9-3 over the Growlers. All losses came away from home, two in Kalamazoo and one at a neutral field in Grand Rapids. With the win, the Pit Spitters magic number to clinch the postseason is two.
Avery Goldensoph (2-0, 2.45) had another stellar start. The Michigan freshman went seven innings for the second straight start, only allowing two hits. He did allow four walks and three runs but struck out a season-high five batters. As a starter, Goldensoph has tallied 20 innings pitched, allowing four runs with 13 strikeouts.
Colin Summerhill struck again with an RBI single in the first. It's his fourth straight game recording a two-out RBI hit in the first inning.
The Growlers went up 3-1 in the third, but in the bottom half, Camden Traficante would strike. He tied the game with a two-run no-doubt home run over the right field wall. He tied the team lead in homers with his third of the season. Two batters later, Sam Tackett knocked in Summerhill, who walked and stole second, to give the Pit Spitters the 4-3 lead.
Traficante would finish with four RBis in the game. He had a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fourth and sixth innings to give his team a 6-3 lead. They would go up 7-3 in the seventh on an error.
The Growlers put two runs up in the top of the eighth, but the Pit Spitters answered right back with two of their own. Without a hit, Glenn Miller and Trey Truitt drew bases loaded walks to push the lead back to four. There were five walks in the inning. Coby Greiner pitched a scoreless ninth to seal the win.
