Spitters Score Late to Win Low-Scoring Game

Rockford, IL - The Traverse City Pit Spitters scored in the ninth inning to take a 3-2 lead and would hold on to beat the Rockford Rivets by that score on Saturday night.

Morgan Lunceford did his job and held the Rivets at bay for most of the night. He allowed just two hits in five innings with one earned run. He struck out three in the no decision.

The Pit Spitters struck first in the top of the fifth. Alec Atkinson doubled to score Camden Traficante. The Rivets would answer in the bottom half and both teams would struggle against the bullpen.

Derek Clark pitched a scoreless sixth for the Pit Spitters. The All-Star struck out two batters and left two stranded to keep the game tied.

The Pit Spitters took the lead in the eighth on a Sam Tackett RBI single. Mitch White would give up the lead on a squeeze bunt in the bottom half. White pitched two relief innings with two strikeouts.

Marshall Toole led off the ninth getting hit by a pitch. He stole second later in the inning. After getting picked off and going into a rundown, he forced a throwing error which allowed him to score the go-ahead run.

Anthony Ramirez struck out a pair and left the tying run on base to end the game and earn the save.

Up Next

The Pit Spitters will play game two in Rockford at 2:00 ET before heading into the All-Star Break. They will exit the break with a home series against Lakeshore starting Thursday the 21st.
