(Windsor, ON) - Jordan Maletta scored the eventual winner late in the second period, as the visiting Niagara IceDogs took a 3-1 win over the Spitfires Sunday at the WFCU Centre.
The loss prevented Windsor (22-29-1-1) from closing to within one point of the Saginaw Spirit for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference.
Instead, the Spitfires head to Guelph (30-20-2-2) on Monday for a Family Day afternoon matinee three points out of the postseason, with just 15 regular season games to go.
Trevor Murphy (19) opened the scoring with his team-leading 19th of the season, on a power play, at 8:10 of the first period.
The Spits took that 1-0 lead to the room after 20 minutes, but Niagara (26-24-2-2) dictated play in the middle frame, getting goals from Blake Siebenaler (11) and Maletta (18) in a 64- second span that turned the game in its favour.
With the Spits trying to get Alex Fotinos (34 saves) to the bench in favour of an extra attacker, Carter Verhaeghe's 26th of the season sealed the win with 1:02 to play.
Josh Ho-Sang had a pair of assists in his first visit to Windsor since being traded to Niagara back in November.
