Windsor Spitfires News Release
(Windsor, ON) - With the #6 selection in the 2015 Canadian Hockey League Import Draft, General Manager Warren Rychel took Russian defenceman Mikhail Sergachev.
A 6'2 1/2 and 198-pound left defenceman, Sergachev spent the 2014-15 season with Kazan Irbis of the MHL.
In 25 games, he posted two goals and six assists along with 18 penalty minutes.
Sergachev was a key cog in Russia's gold medal winning team at the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge last November in Sarnia. In six games, he had one goal and eight penalty minutes while playing big minutes.
Sergachev is regarded as a potential first-round selection in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft in Buffalo.
"Mikhail is a world class player," Rychel said. "He's a surefire first rounder next year. He's a general on the ice. He commands respect and plays in all situations. Mikhail is just a phenomenal player."
KROMP GOES AT 57
With the club's second pick, #57 overall, Rychel selected Austrian Christof Kromp.
Kromp is a 1997-born, 5'11 and 165-pound centre who played last season with Troja Ljungby of the Austrian J18 Elite league.
In 34 games, Kromp scored 13 times and added 7 assists with a +13 rating and 18 penalty minutes.
"We've heard some good things about him," Rychel said. "He's a fast player with a high level of compete. Obviously we're in a situation where we will have three Europeans at camp. He'll provide some healthy competition."
