Windsor Spitfires News Release

The Owen Sound Attack rolled into Windsor Sunday, November 24th, for a matchup with the red-hot Spitfires. This was the first meeting between the two teams this season. Last season the Spitfires went 2-1-1-0 while the Attack went 2-2-0-0.

In the first period, the Attack struck first just over 6 minutes into the period making it 1-0. The Spitfires struck back on the powerplay when two attack players ran into each other and coughed up the puck. Corcoran picked it up and wired it top shelf, tying the game at 1 with 4:25 left in the first. But the Attack responded with a powerplay goal of their own just two minutes later restoring their one-goal lead. After the period concluded, the Spitfires were down 2-1 despite leading in shots 13-8.

In the second frame, the Spits had the powerplay when Tyler Angle sniped one home tying the game at 2 just five minutes in. But six minutes later, the Attack answered restoring another one-goal lead. In the final minute of the period, the Spits were on the penalty kill when Douglas stole the puck from the defenseman and sent the Spits the other way. Purboo streaking up the middle was hit by a pass from Douglas, and Purboo made no mistake tying the game at 3-3. Shots were 25-20 in favour of the Attack after two periods of play.

In the third period, both teams were held scoreless. A couple of penalties to the Attack were killed off, and the one penalty to the Spits was killed off. The Spits led 36-34 in shots after three periods.

The game was headed to overtime! An exciting overtime period was among us, chances at both ends. Back and forth play between the teams. With just over a minute remaining in the overtime, Foudy was all alone in front, and the netminder stopped him, but Foudy regained possession and shot it off the goaltenders back and into the net from behind the net winning the game for the Spitfires! Kari Piiroinen stopped 33 of 36 shots for a 91.7 SV% and a 2.86 GAA.

The Spitfires' next game is on the road against rival London Knights this Friday, November 29th, puck drop at 7:30 pm. The Spitfires' next home game is on November 30th as the Niagara Ice Dogs come to town for a Saturday night matchup, puck drop at 7:05 pm.
