
Spitfires Lose in Overtime to Sarnia 6-5

WINDSOR, ON. - The Spitfires were looking to rebound after dropping a point in last nights overtime lost to the Spirit. The Sting were in town for a New Years Eve clash with a sold out crowd at the WFCU Centre.
In the first period, the Spitfires came out like lightning in a bottle as they fired on all cylinders. Just three minutes into the game, Abraham would stay hot as he scored from behind the goal line to open the scoring. Just over eight minutes later, the Spitfires double-dipped and would go up 2-0. Abraham's shot was deflected by Spellacy into the net for his 8th on the season. Just a few moments later, the Spitfires would score but after review it was no goal due to goaltender interference. The shots were 12-4 in favour of the Sting after 20 minutes.
In the second period, the Spitfires would continue to pour on the offence. On a powerplay, Mancini would find Greentree on the back door for his 22nd of the season. The wheels then fell off for the Spitfires as they gave up three unanswered goals and we were tied at 3 a piece. The Spitfires would restore the lead just a minute later. Davis would rip his 12th on the season with a great shot from the slot. After forty minutes the Spitfires were up 4-3 on the scoreboar but trailed 22-15 in shots.
In the third period, the Sting would control the play and possession of the puck. Just over five minutes in, they would equalize as Brown scored his 6th to tie the game at 4. Late in the frame, the Sting would gain their first lead of the game as Brown scored again to make it 5-4 Sting. Just a minute and a half later, the Spitfires would pull the goalie for the extra attacker. With just over a minute remaining, Oliver Peer would light the lamp on a seeing-eye shot through traffic to know the game up at five. With just one second left in the period, the Spitfires were penalized for hooking sending them to the PK. Morneau won the crucial faceoff and this game was off to overtime.
In the overtime frame, the Sting would have the man-advantage and capitalize as Wainwright would score from the point and take this one 6-5.
The Spitfires are back in action on Wednesday when the Flint Firebirds come to town. Puck drop os scheduled for 7:05pm.
