Sault Ste. Marie, Ont. - The Saginaw Spirit (21-10-0-1) make the trip north to face the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds (23-9-2-1) on Sunday, December 31st, at GFL Memorial Gardens.

Last Time:

In an overtime thriller, Saginaw defeated the Windsor Spitfires on Saturday, December 30th, 5-4, at the Dow Event Center. Both teams opened with a pair of goals in the first, with Windsor scoring two more in the second and Saginaw scoring one, setting a 4-3 score heading into the third period. The Spirit scored about halfway through the third and would take a 4-4 tie into overtime. Saginaw then scored in overtime for their second OT win of the year. Nic Sima, Hunter Haight, and Captain Braden Haché all scored, and Alex Christopoulos scored twice, including the OT winner. Nolan Lalonde protected the net for the Spirit, turning away 20 of the 24 Spitfire shots.

Sault Ste. Marie lost 4-1 to the Sudbury Wolves on Saturday, December 30th at GFL Memorial Gardens. Sudbury scored twice in the opening and final periods to solidify the win. Marco Mignosa scored his 15th of the year, assisted by Brenden Sirizzotti and Jack Beck. Landon Miller started for the Soo, stopping 17 of 20 in his second loss of the year.

Last Matchup:

Saginaw and Sault Ste. Marie last faced off just days ago on Thursday, December 28th, at the Dow Event Center. Saginaw's Michael Misa struck first, but the Soo scored three unanswered and took a 3-1 lead into the second intermission. A powerplay goal from Zayne Parekh brought the Spirit within one, but the Soo responded with two more goals of their own for the 5-2 win.

Jack Beck and Marco Mignosa scored twice, with Andrew Gibson, Travis Hayes, and Spencer Evans adding two assists. Andrew Oke and Nolan Lalonde combined for 20 saves on 24 shots for Saginaw, while Charlie Schenkel started for the visiting Greyhounds, stopping 32 of 34.

Players to Watch:

Zayne Parekh currently leads the team in points (43), including 13 goals that place him second among OHL defensemen. Michael Misa leads the Spirit in goals (15), including seven (7) powerplay markers on one of the league's top-ranked powerplays. Andrew Oke continues to lead Saginaw in all major goaltending categories, sporting 2.91 goals against average (GAA), good for fourth in the OHL, a .897 save percentage (SV%), and 13 wins.

Jack Beck leads the Greyhounds in points with 44, putting him tied for tenth in the OHL. Arttu Kärki leads in goals (16) but is away at the IIHF World Junior Championships for Finland, with teammate Owen Allard playing for Team Canada. Justin Cloutier leads all active players with 15 goals, including two shorthanded tallies. Jack Beck's 13 power play assists tie him for fourth in the OHL, and Andrew Gibson's +21 puts him ninth in the OHL. Travis Hayes is tied for third among all OHL rookies in points, and Charlie Schenkel leads the Soo in all major goaltending categories, including a 3.04 GAA, a .886 SV%, and 17 wins.
