Windsor Spitfires News Release
SAGINAW, MI - The Spitfires were looking to make it three straight wins as they headed to the Dow Event Center for a matchup with the Spirit. It was a tightly contested battle but the Spitfires fell short in overtime, 5-4.
In the first period, it was the former Spitfire getting on the board first for the opposition. Christopoulos went wide and roofed it short side for his 13th of the season. Just four minutes later, the Spirit would double their lead to 2-0. Exactly 30 seconds later, the Spitfires would respond. The Spirit could not contain a bouncing puck that went towards the goal and LaLonde could not cover before Abraham pounced on it for his 10th of the year. Late in the frame, the Spitfires would capitalize on a shorthanded break. Abraham got the puck at the Spirit blueline and went in stopped up and fed Spellacy for the open chance and he went five-hole to tie the game at 2. At the end of the period the Spitfires led in shots 8-7.
In the second period, the Spirit would get a quick one to go up 3-2. However, the lead lasted just 46 seconds as Davis sniped his 11th of the season to tie the game at 3. Late in the frame, the Spitfires would get their first lead of the game. A stretch pass from Maillet went to Abraham and he went cross crease to Greentree and he sniped his 21st of the season, giving the Spitfires a 4-3 lead. After 40 minutes, the shots were tied at 19 a piece.
In the third period, the Spitfires were sent to the box for a delay of game and the Spirit would capitalize on the man advantage. Sima on a one timer beat Costanzo to tie the game at 4. Sixty minutes solved nothing and we were off to OT.
In the overtime frame, the Spitfires would have a chance as Abraham centered the puck to Woodall in front but LaLonde stopped it. A few moments later, Saginaw would score on a rebound in front of the net and take this game 5-4.
The Spitfires are back in action tomorrow Sunday December 31st for our annual New Years Eve game. The Sarnia Sting will be in town for a 2:05pm puck drop.
