Windsor Spitfires News Release

WINDSOR, ON.

The Spitfires were looking to get off on the right foot this weekend after a difficult overtime lost last time out vs Niagara. A special milestone night for Jacob Maillet as he competed in his 200th career OHL game.

In the first period, the Spitfires were able to get on the board first just over a minute into the game. Morneau slid the puck up to Spellacy and he burst down the wing with speed and beat his man on-route to the net as he went bar-down for his 2nd of the season. Just six minutes later, the Spitfires doubled their lead. Eichler went D to D with Dionicio and he fired a pass up the boards to Christopoulos who skated by the defense and sniped his third goal of the season. The Rangers would respond over the next 13 minutes who two goals of their own and one being on the powerplay. We were tied at 2 heading into the intermission. Shots were 11-6 in favour of the Rangers.

In the second period, the Spitfires scoring continued as they got themselves another lead. Abraham took his man out at the Rangers blueline and Castle took the puck in on a 2 on 1 and passed it across to Maillet who buried his 5th on the year. Ten minutes later, the Spitfires were able to capitalize on their first powerplay of the game. It took just 9 seconds as the faceoff was won back and Dionicio fed Smith down low who centered it for Christopoulos and he scored his 2nd of the night, five-hole. The Rangers were unable to respond in the period and the Spitfires had a 4-2 lead heading into the third.

In the third period, both teams would head to the sin-bin multiple times as tempers flared. Just under 7 minutes into the period, the Rangers would strike on the powerplay to pull within one. The next 13 minutes were crucial as just like last weekend the Spitfires did not want to see a two goal lead slip away. They played solid defensively and kept everything to the outside. The final minute the Rangers pulled their netminder for the extra attacker. The Rangers dominated the play and puck possession but the Spitfires were able to hang on for the narrow 4-3 win.

The Spitfires are back in action on Saturday and Sunday in the Soo. Saturday is Joe Thornton retirement night with puck drop at 7:07pm and Sunday will be a 2:07pm start.
