Spitfires Falter in Wild Game, Lose 9-6 to Sarnia

WINDSOR, ON.

The Spitfires were down but not out after 40 minutes of play. They rallied off 4 third period goals but ultimately fell 9-6.

In the first period, both teams traded a few chances. The Spitfires had 16 shot on goal throughout the period and Surzycia stopped them all. The Sting fired off 10 and one found the back of the net with just 1:36 left in the period. A pass backdoor led to an open cage for the Sting and they converted.

In the second period, the Sting would extend their lead to 2-0 with a powerplay goal 4:28 into the frame. The Spitfires would respond with a powerplay goal of their own. Dionicio scored his 12th of the season on a partial breakaway. The Sting would then rally off three goals in a row with one on the powerplay to take a commanding 5-1 lead. With under 5 minutes left in the period, Dionicio would score his 2nd of the night to make it a 5-2 game. The Spitfires led in shots 27-20 after 2 periods.

In the third period, you needed a seatbelt as it was a wild one. The Spitfires would rally off 3 goals in three minutes to tie the game at 5. Castle scored his 17th followed by Maggio's 47th and then Dionicio with his third of the night. Just two minutes later, the Sting would score to make it a 6-5 game. The Spitfires would respond just 24 seconds later with Alex Christopoulos scoring his 41st to tie the game at 6. In the final two and a half minutes, the Sting would score to make it 7-6. They would add two empty net goals and take this one 9-6.

The Spitfires are back in action on the road on Friday March 10th when they visit the Guelph Storm. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30pm.
