Windsor Spitfires News Release
WINDSOR, ON
The Spitfires were on the wrong side of a shootout lost at the WFCU Centre on Friday evening. It was the first shootout of the season and the Spitfires were stopped on all 5 attempts.
In the first period, it was the same story as Wednesday vs Owen Sound, the Spitfires let in the first goal just less than two minutes into the game. The Firebirds outshot the Spitfires 9-6 through the first frame.
In the second period, the Spitfires went on the powerplay just over a minute into the period as Kressler went off for tripping. The Spitfires powerplay went to work and it was Jacob Maillet on a fortuitus bounce who buried his 8th on the season. Just seven minutes later, the Spits took the lead. Maggio fed Abraham on a long pass as the Firebirds made changes, Abraham cut to the net and sniped his 8th of the year. With just three minutes left in the period Flint would score to knot things up at 2 a piece.
In the third period, the Firebirds scored the go-ahead goal just over 5 minutes into the period which gave the Spitfires lots of time to work with and get that tying goal. In the dying seconds of the period, the Spitfires had the net empty. Abraham got the puck back to Maggio at the point and the birthday boy had a seeing eye shot go into the net for his 13th of the season and the game tying goal.
Regulation solved nothing and we were off to OT. In the frame, the Spitfires had 4 shots while the Firebirds had 1 and both goalies stopped them all. OT solved nothing so we were off to a shootout.
In the shootout the Spitfires had 5 shooters all stopped by Day (Christopoulos, Miedema, Sobolev, Maggio, Smith). The Firebirds also had 5 shooters and 4 were stopped by Costanzo before Slavicek won it for Flint.
The Spitfires are back in action tomorrow Saturday November 26th as they travel to Saginaw for a matchup with the Spirit. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:05pm.
