Saginaw Spirit News Release

THIS WEEK IN SPIRIT HOCKEY:

It was a week filled with West Division opponents as the Spirit traveled to Flint for their fourth meeting with their I-75 Divide Rival, and battled the Windsor Spitfires in a home-and-home series.

Wednesday night, the Spirit traveled down to Flint for their fourth meeting with their I-75 Divide Rival Flint Firebirds. The Firebirds held a two games to one lead in the season series for the Coors Light Cup. The Spirit got on the board 1:05 into the first on Kris Bennett's sixth goal of the season. Flint was quick to respond, scoring the next three goals in the game. The Spirit mounted a late comeback when Artem Artemov scored to make it 3-2 in the third period. Cullen Mercer added an insurance goal for Flint to give them a 4-2 decision.

After the Thanksgiving holiday, the Spirit took a trip across the border to face the first-place Windsor Spitfires on Friday night. The Spits got off to a good start scoring the game's first two goals. Kris Bennett notched his seventh goal of the season to get the Spirit back to within a goal. Unfortunately, that is a close as the Spirit would get. Windsor piled on the next three goals, taking the game, 5-1.

On Saturday night, the Spirit faced off against the Spitfires in the backend of a home-and-home series. The Spits buried the first three tallies of the game from Aaron Luchuk, Markus Soberg, and Christian Fischer. Markus Niemelainen scored his first OHL goal to get the Spirit on the board in the first period. The Spirit battled all the way back to take a 4-3 lead in the third period. Jesse Barwell added an empty net goal late in the third to cement a 5-3 win for the Saginaw Spirit.
