Spirit slug their way to victory

North Shore Spirit News Release
After struggling to score runs during the first two games of the series, the Spirit bats came to life in the finale on Sunday and North Shore avoided the series sweep with a 7-5 victory on Father's Day at Fraser Field.
With his father in the stands, Garrett Weir was 4-5 in the game with four singles two runs scored while Alex Trezza went 3-4 with a home run, two doubles and two runs scored.
With the victory, the Spirit improved to 12-8 on the season while the Tornadoes dropped to 12-11 on the year.
The Spirit struck first in this game, with a second-inning score. Trezza got things off with a double. He advanced to third on a ground ball and came scored on a ground out from Ryan Bethel. The RBI was Bethel's first in a Spirit uniform.
Worcester evened the score in the top of the fourth inning. Chris Colabello laced a one-out single and came around to score on a single from Jeff Lahair.
North Shore responded with a run in the bottom of the fourth, however, and once again it was Trezza supplying the power. With one out in the inning, Trezza launched a solo home run, his fourth of the season, to put the Spirit back on top.
The lead would be short-lived, though, as Worcester put together a two-run fifth inning to take their first lead of the game. Lucas Taylor walked to lead off the inning and Josh Beauregard followed with single. Both came around to score in the inning.
The Spirit offense came back with two runs of their own in the home half of the inning to reclaim the lead. North Shore opened the inning with three straight singles, including a base hit RBI from Vic Davilla. Rowan scored Weed with a sacrifice fly to center to put the Spirit ahead.
In the back-and-forth contest, however, no lead was safe and the Spirit advantage was once again overcome by a persistent Worcester offense the seventh inning. Tucker Frawley opened the inning with a single. A Spirit error and an intentional walk loaded the bases, and the Tornadoes picked up the tying run on a walk. With the bases loaded and just one out, though, Spirit reliever Eric Drown was able to escape from the jam without allowing another run.
Facing a tie game once again, the Spirit offense rose to the challenge and opened the game up with three runs in the bottom half of the inning. Weir reached on a single and Vic Davilla drew a one-out walk to set up a two-run go-ahead double from Andrew Wishy. Jeff Brooks followed with another RBI double to give the Spirit some insurance.
Worcester cut the lead to two runs with an eighth-inning score. Lahair led off with a walk and scored on an RBI single from Frawley. That would be as close as the Tornadoes would get in this game, however, as the Spirit held on for the win.
Spirit reliever Eric Drown allowed one hit and one run in one inning of work to earn his second victory of the season. Kevin Fitzgerald picked up his fourth save of the year for the Spirit. Worcester reliever Chris Shank suffered the loss.
The Spirit will be back in action on Tuesday as they open a three game series with the Brockton Rox.
