
Spirit Shutout Spitfires 5-0

(Windsor, ON) - The Saginaw Spirit started their three game stretch with a 5-0 shutout win over the Windsor Spitfires Thursday night in Windsor. The night was full of career milestones, with Spirit goalie Marc-André Perron earning his first OHL career shutout and winger Patrick Asselin notching his 50th point of the season.
Winger Jan Mursak tallied his 75th point of the season, being only the fifth Spirit player in team history to reach the plateau; Tom Pyatt (06-07), Ryan McDonough (05-06), Patrick McNeill (05-06) and Michal Birner (05-06) also hold the distinction. Spirit General Manager and Head Coach Bob Mancini earned his 90th win of his OHL coaching career. Saginaw also broke a 7 game losing streak when playing in Windsor; the last time the Spitfires lost to the Spirit on their ice was on September 23rd, 2004. The Spirit advanced their record to 42-21-0-3 and 87 points.
The Spirit opened scoring in the latter half of the first period. Winger Patrick Asselin tallied a power play goal at the 12:57 mark, assisted by winger Jan Mursak (DET) and defenseman T.J. Brodie. Spirit winger Tom Craig extended Saginaw's lead to 2-0 with a power play goal at 19:49 in the first, assisted by defenseman Andrew Hotham and winger Chris Chappell.
Saginaw responded to a scoreless second period with three unanswered goals in the third. Winger Andrew Clouthier moved the score to 3-0 with a goal at 10:16 in the third, assisted by winger Tomas Zaborsky (NYR) and center Cody Bass (OTT). Winger Jack Combs, assisted by winger Ryan McDonough and Asselin, notched a goal less than a minute later at the 11:01 mark to take the score to 4-0. Spirit winger Ryan Berard capped off the scoring with a goal at 15:47 in the third, assisted by Mursak.
Spirit netminder Marc-André Perron tallied 29 saves in the shutout.

The Spirit have earned the fourth seed and home ice advantage for the 2007 OHL playoffs. The team will play the fifth seed, which is currently being contested between the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds and the Guelph Storm. Both teams have two games left to play, with games this Friday and Saturday. If the Soo Greyhounds win at least one point or the Guelph Storm lose at least one game, then the Spirit will start the playoffs against the Greyhounds.
The Saginaw Spirit resume action tomorrow at 7:11 PM when they host the Sarnia Sting at the Dow Event Center in Saginaw. The Windsor Spitfires are in town Sunday for a 2:00 PM match-up.
