PETERBOROUGH, ONT. - On Thursday night, the Spirit kicked off their weekend trip at the Peterborough Memorial Centre, for the final meeting of the season between the Spirit and the Petes. Although Saginaw outshot Peterborough 49-25, the Petes used goaltender Matthew Mancina and two goals in the second period to defeat the Spirit 3-1.
In the first period, the Saginaw Spirit and Peterborough Petes battled back and forth throughout a majority of the frame. It wasn't until 15:11 when Peterborough's Adam Timleck opened the game's scoring and notched a 1-0 lead for the Petes. Despite the one-goal deficit, Saginaw had a multitude of scoring chances, including substantial efforts from Mitchell Stephens and Artem Artemov. The Spirit controlled play in the first period, outshooting the Petes 15-9.
A deflection by rookie Cole Coskey put the Spirit on the board and tied the game 1-1 at 3:07 of the second period. Tye Felhaber and Marcus Crawford picked up the helpers on the Coskey's fourth goal of the season. The Petes scored two consecutive goals from Logan DeNoble and Greg Betzold to push Peterborough up by a score of 3-1. The Spirit continued to dominate offensively, as they outshot the Petes 18-4 in the second period.
A scoreless third period kept the Petes out in front with a 3-1 lead. Peterborough goaltender Matthew Mancina denied the Spirit's season-high of 49 shots and held the Spirit at a two-goal deficit through the final period. Peterborough finished the contest with 25 shots on Saginaw's Evan Cormier.
