North Shore Spirit News Release
Lynn, MA â Fraser Field played host to extra inning baseball for the second straight night Wednesday. When all was said and done, it was the North Shore Spirit who came away with the 8-7 win over the Brockton Rox.
Nick Vandegriff picked up his first win as a member of the Spirit. Dave Stevens (0-2) was the hard luck loser for Brockton.
Both teams pushed across a lone run in the first. North Shore tacked on two more in the second thanks to a RBI double by Mike Granger.
The Spirit increased their lead to 4-1 in the third. Vic Davilla got things started with a double off the wall in left. He would score three batters later on a Frank Charles RBI basehit over a drawn-in infield.
The Rox capitalized on a North Shore error to tie the game with three unearned runs in the sixth. The Spirit quickly responded with two of their own in the bottom half of the inning. Davilla continued his big night with a sac fly and Nelson Teilon chipped in an RBI single, giving North Shore the 6-4 advantage.
Brockton continued to battle back. Jake Daubert's two-out, two-run single knotted the game at six after seven complete.
The Rox took a one-run lead in the top of the ninth thanks to a Saul Bustos solo shot, his 9th of the season. North Shore pulled even in the home half on a Mike Granger sacrifice fly to left.
In the bottom of the tenth, Joe Hastings singled with one out and advanced to third on an infield hit by catcher Onix Mercado. Erick Mejias then lifted a lazy fly ball down the line in left that was misplayed by Tommy Joyce, allowing Hastings to score with the game-winning run.
North Shore finished the game with 17 hits. Mike Granger was 2-3 with three RBI's.
RHP Klae Calvert (3-0, 1.76) takes the mound for the Spirit on Thursday night and will face Brockton's Shad Williams. Thursday's game begins at 7:05 pm, gates open at 5:30 pm.
