Spirit Remain in Third Despite 6-2 Loss to Whalers

(Saginaw, MI) The third place Saginaw Spirit lost 6-2 to the fourth place Plymouth Whalers Wednesday night, but despite the loss still retain the third seed in the OHL Western Conference. The Spirit have 70 points and a record of 32-22-2-4. The Whalers are sitting in fourth place with 69 points and the Guelph Storm are in fifth with 67 points.

The Spirit were the first to make it on the scoreboard as defenseman T.J. Brodie (NHL CALGARY FLAMES) placed a goal in at 11:19. Assisting him on the powerplay goal was center Jack Combs and defenseman Nick Crawford (NHL BUFFALO SABRES). Whalers center Chris Terry evened things up with a power play goal at the 14:03 mark, assisted by center Tyler Seguin and center Matt Caria.

Caria made an unassisted goal for 0:11 seconds into the next frame, giving the Whalers a one goal edge. Spirit winger Jordan Skellett was responded with a goal less than a minute later, 1:01 in the second, tying the score 2-2. Assisting him were Combs and winger Chris Chappell. The Whalers momentum would continue however, with their offense adding a goal in the final second of the period to take a 3-2 lead over the Spirit. Plymouth winger A.J. Jenks tallied the goal at 19:59, assisted by winger Ryan Hayes and center Tyler G. Brown.

The Whalers secured the win in the third period. Plymouth blueliner Michal Jordan notched a goal at 10:28 in the third, courtesy an assist from Terry. Center Vern Cooper moved the score to 5-2 with a powerplay goal at the 13:43 mark, with the assists going to Jordan and Seguin. Seguin followed with a goal of this own, this one a power play marker finalizing the 6-2 Whalers victory, at 16:00 in the third. Terry and Jenks assisted on the goal.

Saginaw goalie Edward Pasquale finished the game with 32 saves on 38 shots while Plymouth netminder Matt Hackett posted 24 saves on 26 shots.
