Spirit Midfielder/Defender Morgan Goff Announces Retirement

Washington, D.C. - Second-year Washington Spirit player Morgan Goff is retiring, the midfielder/defender announced today. After joining the club last July as a national team replacement player, Goff was with the Spirit for the 2021 championship run and appeared in 11 matches in 2022.

"My decision to retire early was long and deliberated. I knew it was time for soccer to take a back seat and move forward with the next dream," said Goff. "I want to thank my Spirit teammates, the Spirit staff and our amazing fans for taking me in and supporting me throughout my time here. I received nothing but love and support following my decision. Thank you to my friends and family who pushed me to my potential and stood behind me in the ups and downs. Much love to the Spirit community."

Goff earned her first NWSL minutes on April 3, 2022 when she entered a Challenge Cup match against the Orlando Pride at Audi Field as a substitute for Anna Heilferty in the 69th minute. In four Challenge Cup matches and seven regular season matches, Goff compiled 406 total minutes on the NWSL pitch.

"Morgan is a great competitor, a consummate professional and an even better human," said Spirit head coach Kris Ward. "She always gave her best and did so with a smile. We will miss her and certainly wish her well."

A native of Dunn, North Carolina, Morgan attended the University of North Carolina and competed for the Tar Heels from 2016 to 2019. In her four seasons in Chapel Hill, Goff totaled nearly 5,000 minutes played over 101 matches and tallied four goals and four assists. Upon graduating from UNC, Morgan signed to play with Icelandic Premier League club Þróttur in Reykjavík.
