Washington Spirit News Release
BOYDS, Md. (August 11, 2015)- The Washington Spirit (7-5-3, 24 points) will play the Western New York Flash (5-8-3, 18 points) on Wednesday August 12th at 7:00 p.m. EST at the Maryland SoccerPlex. This is the Spirit's second to last home game for the 2015 regular season.
"The team is prepared and ready to bounce back on Wednesday night," said head coach Mark Parsons. "We continue to get stronger as a team and feel the best games are ahead of us. Wednesday night we are going to have to dig deep and perform at our best. I look forward to seeing and hearing the best fans in the league cheer us on."
The game this Wednesday will be the second match-up between the two sides. On May 23rd the Washington Spirit traveled to New York to face the Flash and dropped points on the road with a score of 3-2. The game was an equal contest with 10 shots on goal for the Spirit and eight shots on goal for the Flash. The first Flash goal came from Lynn Williams who weaved through the Spirit backline and slotted the ball past the diving Kelsey Wys. Then the Spirit capitalized from a Flash handball in the box, when Christine Nairn tied the game on a penalty kick 1-1. Before the first half concluded Sam Mewis and Becky Edwards combined off a corner to make it 2-1. Forward Crystal Dunn came out of the locker room with urgency and equalized after getting on the end of a beautiful cross from Nairn. However, a couple minutes later the Flash took the lead again with Jasmyne Spencer scoring, which secured the victory for the home side.
On Saturday August 8th the Spirit suffered a tough 2-1 defeat to the Boston Breakers. Now the Spirit will play their second game in five days as they look to continue their playoff push. The duo of Dunn and Matheson has been very strong as they continue to combine and feed off each other in games. Additionally, the Spirit will need to be strong in the midfield to secure a win at home.
With several teams looking to secure an NWSL playoff spot, each game is crucial and the Spirit will need every player to continue to step up and have an impact on the game.
