Boston Breakers News Release

HANOVER, Mass (Aug. 11, 2015) - Boston Breakers goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher was voted the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) Player of the Week by the media for Week 17 of the 2015 NWSL season.

Naeher, 27, made 12 crucial saves for Boston to help the Breakers record a 2-1 win against the Washington Spirit on Saturday night at Soldiers Field Soccer Stadium in Boston.

The Bridgeport, Conn. native was able to stop 12 of 28 shots, 13 of which were on goal during her spectacular performance. The Spirit kept trying to get the ball past Naeher, but were only able to score once as Diana Matheson found the back of the net during Naeher's fifth attempt for a save.

The Penn State alum kept her cool as she continued to be tested, but was able to stop the league's leading scorer Crystal Dunn from getting a goal, despite her best efforts. Dunn and Matheson kept looking for their opportunity to give Washington another goal, but Naeher would stop every shot after that.

Naeher is the fifth Breakers player to be honored as the NWSL Player of the Week. She received the honor in Week 18 of the 2014 NWSL season and is the second goalkeeper following Portland Thorns FC goalkeeper Michelle Betos to be named player of the week during the 2015 NWSL season.

The Boston Breakers will return to action Saturday, Aug. 22 at 8 p.m. ET against FC Kansas City at Swope Soccer Village in Kansas City, Mo.

The NWSL Player of the Week is selected each week of the regular season by a selection of journalists that cover the league on a consistent basis.
