North Shore Spirit News Release
Spirit starter John Kelly tossed a gem for the Spirit on Wednesday night, going the distance in a 5-0 shutout victory over the New Jersey Jackals at the New Fraser Field.
Kelly earned his 11th victory of the season for the Spirit, while Marty Janzen suffered the loss for the Jackals. Kelly picked up 12 strikeouts in the complete-game effort, bringing his league-leading total to 107 on the season.
The Spirit offense gave Kelly more than enough support in this game, coming out with five runs on eight hits. Vic Davilla continued to pace the North Shore attack, finishing the night 3-4 with three RBI's. Garrett Weir came up big as well, going 2-4 from the leadoff position and scoring two runs on the night.
North Shore struck first in this game, picking up a run in the first inning. Garrett Weir led off the game with a double for the Spirit offense and scored on Davilla's RBI single. The RBI was the 75th of the season for Davilla.
He would add number 76 two innings later with his second RBI single in as many at-bats. With two out in the third inning, Rob Fischer was hit by the pitch and stole second to move into scoring position. Davilla sent him home to give the Spirit the 2-0 lead after three innings.
The Spirit doubled their lead to four with two runs in the fifth inning. Weir singled to get on base and then stole both second and third. After Rob Fischer was once against hit with a Janzen pitch, Davilla laced his third straight RBI single to score Weir from third. With two on and just one out, Janzen hit Travis Oglesby with a pitch to load the bases. Josh Tranum followed with a sacrifice fly to center field to score Fischer with the final run of the inning.
The Spirit tacked on one last run in the eighth inning on a sacrifice fly from Alex Trezza to close out the scoring on the night.
These two teams will face off in the rubber game tomorrow night at the New Fraser Field. Game time is 7:05 at the New Fraser Field.
