Cutters ride six run inning to victory

August 24, 2005 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
New Haven County Cutters News Release

For the second night in a row, a big inning for the New Haven County Cutters resulted in a lopsided victory over the Brockton Rox. A 12-4 win on Wednesday night gave the Cutters their third win in a row and ensured that they would not give up any ground in the Can-Am League?s South Division. They entered the game with a three game lead over Worcester.

All indications pointed to this game being an offensive battle, with Brockton batting around in the first inning and scoring three times. The Cutters hit back immediately, tallying two runs of their own. But Brockton's bats went cold and they would not score again until their final at bat, while the home team continued to pile on runs all night.

The big burst of offense came in the bottom of the fourth for the Cutters. Six runs would cross the plate, highlighted by Jeff Brooks's first triple of the season that scored two of his teammates.

After struggling in the first inning Stawarz settled down and tossed four innings of shutout baseball. His line for the evening read: five innings pitched, three earned runs, three walks and six strikeouts.

The Rox's starter Brad Guy did not fair as well. Making his first start for Brockton after spending most of the summer pitching in Taiwan, he lasted only three and one third innings, surrendering seven runs, six of which were earned.

The Cutters welcomed back third baseman Junior Zamora, who had been out since August 14 with a hamstring injury. He did not appear to be rusty at the plate, belting two doubles and adding a pair of RBIs. It was a four-hit night for Cutters first baseman Bill Peavey, who also drove in three runs.

Brockton's fourth run came in the top of the ninth off the bat of Craig Lewis. The first baseman blasted his 10th home run of the season, a solo shot that easily cleared Yale Field?s left field wall.

The Cutters go for the series sweep on Thursday. Tim Keinath (3-6) starts for New Haven County. He will be opposed by former Red Sox pitcher Dennis ?Oil Can? Boyd (3-3). The 45-year old will be making his 13th start for the visitors. It is Red Sox/Yankees Rivalry night at Yale Field along with Thirsty Thursday ($1 beer).
