Time: 2:35 ATT: 833 W: Tony Pierce (3-5) L: John Dillinger (0-3) S: None HR: None Starter Tony Pierce was brilliant, throwing a complete-game three-hitter and striking out 11 Elmira hitters for his third win of the season as the Grays knocked off the Pioneers 5-0. The Grays notched one run in the first on 1B Mark Burke's RBI single, one in the second on SS Alex Garcia's RBI single, and three more in the fourth on an error by Elmira LF Toshi Suzuki. Grays C Brad Hargreaves ended the evening 2-for-4 with two runs scored, while Garcia went 2-for-3. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- NEW HAVEN COUNTY 12, BROCKTON 4 @ West Haven, Conn. Time: 3:10 ATT: 1,014 W: Jarrett Stawarz (8-6) L: Brad Guy (0-3) S: None HR: BRK - Craig Lewis (10) 15 hits and a six-run fourth propelled New Haven County to a 12-4 victory over Brockton. The Rox got three in the first on a 3B Jake Daubert two-run double and a bases-loaded walk to C Brian Jones, but it was all Cutters the rest of the way; they responded with two in the first on an RBI single from 1B Bill Peavey and an RBI double from 3B Junior Zamora, and piled on another six three innings later, including a two-run triple from DH Jeff Brooks, an RBI double from Zamora and RBI singles from Peavey and C Andy Larned. New Haven then scored another in the fifth and three more in the eighth. On the evening, Peavey went 4-for-5 with three RBI, while four other Cutters had two hits. Four players had two hits for Brockton. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- WORCESTER 14, QUEBEC 3 @ Worcester, Mass. Time: 2:38 ATT: 2,740 W: Reid Willett (10-4) L: Eric Wikstrom (0-1) S: None HR: WOR - Yohanny Valera (14), Keith Beauregard (3), Chris Colabello (6) Worcester slugged two grand slams and hit around Quebec newcomer and Central League Rookie Pitcher of the Year Eric Wikstrom to whip the slumping Capitales 14-3. With the game tied 1-1 in the third, Tornadoes CF Josh Beauregard and SS Omar Pena both hit RBI doubles before C Yohanny Valera made the score 5-1 with a two-run double. Worcester then continued the attack with a five-run fifth that included a grand slam by LF Keith Beauregard, and another grand slam in the eighth by 1B Chris Colabello. Every Tornadoes starter had at least one hit, including 2B Alex Nunez, who went 4-for-5. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- NORTH SHORE 5, NEW JERSEY 0 @ Lynn, Mass. Time: 2:55 ATT: 1,854 W: John Kelly (10-4) L: Marty Janzen (6-3) S: None HR: None North Shore starter John Kelly was efficient as usual, mowing down New Jersey hitters as the Spirit sailed to a 5-0 victory. Kelly tossed a five-hit shutout, striking out twelve Jackals for his 11th victory of the season and second complete game on the year. North Shore got their first three runs on RBI singles from 3B Vic Davilla in the first, third and fifth innings, added another in the fifth on 1B Josh Tranum's sacrifice fly, and tacked on one more in the eighth on C Alex Trezza's sac fly. LF Steve Checksfield went 3-for-4 for New Jersey.
