New Haven County Cutters News Release

August 24, 2005 - For the third straight game, the Brockton Rox (22-11) surrendered double digits in runs to their opponent, falling 12-4 to the New Haven County Cutters (23-12).

One day after a 10-run fifth inning sent the Rox to an 11-2 defeat, New Haven County tallied six times in the bottom of the fourth to turn a one-run deficit into a commanding 8-3 lead.

In the process, the Cutters ruined the return of Brockton starter Brad Guy to American soil. Guy, who started on Opening Day for the Rox against Elmira, had left in late June to play in Taiwan.

On Wednesday night, he was handed a 3-0 lead before he ever threw a pitch, thanks to a Jake Daubert two-run double and a bases-loaded walk drawn by batterymate Brian Jones.

The Cutters came back with two runs of their own in the bottom of the first, but catcher Andy Larned struck out with the bases loaded to end the threat.

No matter; in the fourth, New Haven would take control for good. After two singles started the inning, an error by Rox shortstop Eugene Julien sent Mike LaRosa scurrying home with the tying run. Two batters later, the middle of the Cutters order almost hit for the cycle. First baseman Bill Peavey singled in the go-ahead run, third baseman Junior Zamora followed with an RBI double to knock out Guy, and Jeff Brooks greeted new pitcher Jon Koch with a two-run triple for a 7-3 lead. Brooks himself came home on a Larned base hit, the sixth run of the frame.

One more run off Koch in the fifth and three unearned scores off Manny Tejada in the eighth brought the Cutters' lead to 12-3.

Brockton first baseman Craig Lewis crushed a superfluous solo home run in the ninth, his tenth of the season.

Lewis' opposite number, Peavey, finished 4-5 with three RBI to reach base for the 50th consecutive game.

Guy (0-3) shouldered the loss for Brockton, allowing eight hits and seven runs (six earned) over 3.1 innings. Cutters starter Jarrett Stawarz (8-6) hurled five innings of three-run work, walking three while striking out six, to earn the victory.

On Thursday at 7:05, the two teams finish their three-game series at Yale Field, with Oil Can Boyd (3-3, 3.44) pitching for the Rox against New Haven County's Tim Keinath (3-6, 5.36).
