North Shore Spirit News Release
Brockton scored early and often Friday night at Fraser Field and they held onto their lead down the stretch, defeating the Spirit 6-4 in the series opener and handing North Shore just their second loss in the last 11 games.
After tossing back-to-back shutouts in his last two starts, Joey Siak struggled out of the gate in this contest as the Rox got to him for a pair of first-inning runs. Eugene Julien reached on an error to lead off the game and Mike Scanzano followed with a bunt single. Jason Radwan plated both with an RBI base hit to put the Rox ahead, 2-0 after one half inning.
The Spirit answered with two runs of their own in the home half of the inning to even the score. With two on and two out in the inning, Ricardo Cordova popped the ball up into the middle of the Brockton infield. The Rox infielders misplayed the easy out into an error, however, allowing Luis Sabino to score the first Spirit run. Jeff Brooks followed with a solid single to left-center that scored Vic Davilla with the game-tying run.
Unfortunately for the Spirit, The Rox would reclaim their lead in the top of the third as Francisco Lebron led off the inning with a line-drive home run over the left field wall. The long ball was his sixth of the season. Jason Radwan followed with a single and after Siak rang up Mike Torres, Zach Strong doubled to give the Rox two runners in scoring position. Brad Rosenblat scored both with a base hit unto the left field corner to put the Rox ahead, 5-2.
The Rox tacked on another run in the fourth inning, once again taking advantage of a Spirit error. Scanzano reached second base on the second miscue of the game from Ryan Bethel and scored the sixth Rox run on a single off the bat of Lebron.
The Spirit got one back in the bottom of the fourth courtesy of an RBI single from Davilla. Bethel drew a walk to get things started, moved to second on Sabino's third hit of the contest, and came around to score on Davilla's base hit to center.
North Shore inched closer in the seventh. After a two-out walk to Alex Trezza, Bethel blooped an RBI double down the line in left, narrowing the Brockton lead to 6-4. That's as close as the Spirit would get however, as Rox reliever Kyle George tossed two innings of shutout relief to pick up the save, his third of the season.
The series moves to Brockton tomorrow night for the final two games. The Spirit return to Fraser Field on Tuesday, August 22nd to kick off a three-game set with the New Jersey Jackals.
