Washington Spirit News Release
BOYDS, MD. (May 21, 2014) - The Washington Spirit are set to take on Sky Blue FC in a match on today at the Maryland SoccerPlex. This will be the first of three scheduled matches between the clubs.
The Spirit are coming off a come-from-behind 3-2 victory over the Western New York Flash in their last game. The win brought their record to 3-4-0, putting them in 6th place. Sky Blue FC also won their last match, over the Flash, bringing them to 3-4-2 and 7th place in the standings.
In the match against the Flash, the Spirit found success with a new lineup. Forced to adapt with the injury to defender Toni Pressley, the Spirit moved Ali Krieger to the center of the defense and Bianca Sierra to right back. The Spirit also made changes to the midfield with Yael Averbuch returning to the starting lineup.
The Spirit were led by forward Jodie Taylor, who tallied two goals, and directly contributed to another by causing a Flash own goal. The Spirit will look to repeat that level of offensive production to match Sky Blue FC.
Look for goalkeeper Ashlyn Harris to continue her solid play. She made a series of saves early in the match against the Flash to keep the Spirit in the game. Her presence in net is huge if the Spirit want to keep winning.
The Spirit kickoff against Sky Blue FC at 7 pm Wednesday night at the Maryland SoccerPlex.
