Saginaw Spirit News Release
The Saginaw Spirit welcomed the Kitchener Rangers to the Dow Event Center on Saturday night for their last home game for the 2014-15 regular season. Before puck drop the Spirit honored former goaltender Jake Paterson for his four and a half years with Saginaw and his achievement as the franchise's all-time leader in both games played in the position and in career wins. The Saginaw Spirit finished their regular season with a 3-1 victory over the Kitchener Rangers, finishing the regular season with a 29-36-2-1 record.
The Saginaw Spirit and Kitchener Rangers faced off in a fairly even matched first period, but only the Spirit were able to capitalize on offense and find the back of the net. The Spirit and Rangers were in a bit of a deadlock until the later part of the first period. Saginaw's Adam McPhail opened the game's scoring at 16:41 of the period, netting his 2nd goal of the season with Tye Felhaber and Kris Bennett on the assists. Saginaw's starting goaltender Evan Cormier faced off against Jake Paterson, who was traded to the Kitchener Rangers earlier this year. The Spirit and Rangers were tied at 7 shots on net in the first period, with Saginaw taking a 1-0 lead over the visiting team.
The Saginaw Spirit were able to cushion their lead toward the later end of the second period when Spirit center Mitch Stephens beat Paterson on his 22nd goal of the season. Stephens' goal came at 14:43 of the period with Artem Aretmov being credited for the lone assist on the play. Kitchener eventually scored with 4 minutes left to go in the period after Max Iafrate netted the Rangers first goal of the evening. Mark Bzowey assisted the goal that made it a 2-1 game. Shots on goal in the second period favored the Rangers 13-11.
The Saginaw Spirit and Kitchener Rangers were caught in a standstill until the Rangers pulled Jake Paterson in hopes of tying the game at two. Saginaw's Vladislav Kodola took advantage of Kitchener's empty net and ripped the puck down the ice to score the game winning goal and his 7th of the season. The final score at the Dow Event Center read Saginaw 3, Kitchener 1, with shots on goal favoring the Spirit 35-25.
The Saginaw Spirit will begin the first round of the 2014-15 playoff season on Friday, March 27th against the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds. The boys will take the ice at the Essar Centre at 7:07 p.m. The Spirit will continue their time at the Essar Centre on Saturday, March 28th to face off against the Greyhounds for game two of the playoffs. That game is also scheduled to begin at 7:07 p.m. These games can be heard on the flagship station of the Saginaw Spirit FM Talk and Sports WSGW 100.5. Home games one and two of the series will go at the Dow Event Center on Tuesday, March 31st and Thursday, April 2nd at 7:11 p.m. Tickets at saginawspirit.com.
