Spirit Defeat Soo Greyhounds 3-2 in Exhibition Game

The Spirit wrapped up the 2011 pre-season with a 3-2 win over the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds Saturday night at The Dow Event Center. Ryan O'Connor, Terry Trafford and Michael Fine scored for Saginaw.

The Greyhounds take a two goal lead early in the contest. Soo defenseman Mackenzie Schwindt tallied a power play goal at 1:30 in the first period courtesy assists from forwards Cory Durocher and Brett Findlay. The Greyhounds extended their lead to 2-0 in the second period, with Durocher scoring at the 8:00 minute mark from blueliner Darnell Nurse.

The Spirit quickly fired back, reducing the deficit to 2-1 at 8:38 in the second from defenseman Ryan O'Connor. Forward Sam Povorozniouk and defenseman Dalton Young assisted on the play. Saginaw forward Terry Trafford scored the equalizer at 16:48 in the second, a power play goal assisted by defenseman Peter Hermenegildo and forward Michael Fine.

The Spirit took a 3-2 lead in the third period, with Fine scoring at 6:43 from forward Jimmy Lodge and Young. The Spirit clamped down on the Greyhounds and kept the one goal lead, securing the 3-2 victory.

Spirit netminder Jake Paterson tallied 23 saves on 25 shots, with Greyhounds goalie Chris Perugini notching 34 saves on 37 shots.

The Saginaw Spirit go on the road next weekend to start the new season. The Spirit visit the London Knights Friday, September 23 and the Owen Sound Attack on Saturday, September 24. Both games start at 7:30 PM, and fans can catch the action LIVE with Leigh Cunningham and Dennis Desrosiers on FM Talk and Sports WSGW 100.5.

The team will host the Meijer Home Opening Weekend Celebration on Friday, September 30 and Saturday, October 1 against the Kitchener Rangers and the Ottawa 67's. Both games start at 7:11 PM. There is a magnet schedule giveaway courtesy Coors Light and Four Points by Sheraton both nights. Saturday the Spirit will be hosting a banner raising ceremony in recognition of the team winning the OHL West Division title last season.
