Kitchener Rangers News Release

The Kitchener Rangers finished their exhibition schedule with a 3-2 record, after they beat the Sudbury Wolves 6-3 Saturday night at The Aud.

The Rangers opened the scoring when Zach Lorentz picked off a clearing attempt deep in Sudbury territory and fired it past Joel Vienneau blocker side to make it 1-0 Kitchener at 6:40 of the first period.

From there, the boys in Blue picked up the pace, out-shooting the Wolves 11-4 in the opening 10 minutes. Then at 11:24, Radek Faksa stretched the Rangers lead to two when he beat Vienneau five-hole on a pass from Ben Fanelli.

Both teams found themselves in penalty trouble in the opening frame: Kitchener netminder Frank Palazzese was forced to make several big stops when the Rangers took three consecutive penalties, giving the Wolves an extended 5-on-3 power play.

After the Rangers penalty kill kept Sudbury off the board, it was the Wolves spending time in the box with three back-to-back penalties of their own, including a hooking call late in the period on Charlie Dodero that gave Kitchener a man-advantage to start the second.

The Rangers power play capitalized, with Brandon Francisco finding the back of the net just 27 seconds into the frame, pushing the lead to 3-0. Assisting on the goal were Michael Catenacci and Evan McEneny.

Sudbury would fight back in the second period, however. Greg Jambrosich collected a rebound and pushed it past Palazzese at 9:38 to make it 3-1. Just 10 seconds later Beni Derisha cut the Rangers lead to one on a feed from Andre Comtois. Then, at 10:57 Nathan Pancel evened the score at 3-3 with an unassisted short-handed marker.

Rangers blueliner Cory Genovese and Wolves winger Scott Mitchell dropped the gloves at 16:06. Each were assessed a five minute penalty and a game misconduct.

Kitchener broke the deadlock at 7:48 in the third period, when Brandon Lesway went top shelf, with assists from Brent Pedersen and Curtis Meighan.

Michael Hasson added a power play goal with just over four minutes to play, beating Vienneau high glove-side and making it 5-3 Rangers. McEneny and Catenacci each recorded their second assists of the night on the play. Hasson would add an empty net goal for Kitchener with less than 10 seconds on the clock.

Palazzese stopped 28 of the 31 pucks he faced. Kitchener out-shot the Wolves 23-8 in the third period, finishing with a 55-31 overall advantage.
