Saginaw Spirit News Release
Saturday night at The Dow Event Center the Soo Greyhounds came to town to take on the Saginaw Spirit on Jan Mursak night! Former Spirit player and current Red Wing Jan Mursak was on hand for the event sponsored by Causley Trucking! The Spirit then defeated Sault Ste. Marie by the score of 6-4. Scoring for Spirit was spread out amongst three players, Josh Shalla, Garret Ross and Terry Trafford.
4:29 into the first period Josh Shalla scored on a power play. Defensemen Ryan O'Connor and center, John McFarland assisted Shalla's goal. The Greyhounds answered with a goal by left-winger David Quesnele to tie the game 1-1. Spirit forward Garret Ross responded on a power play with a goal of his own, left-winger Brandon Saad and center, Vincent Trocheck assisted Ross' goal to put the Spirit back within a one-point lead. This would end the first period with the Spirit 2-1 over the Greyhounds.
The Greyhounds would tie the game up early in the second period with a goal from left-winger David Broll. Garret Ross notched his second goal of the night, shorthanded on a breakaway to put the Spirit back in the lead 3-2, but this would not be enough to stop the Greyhounds. Seconds later, left-winger Michael Schumacher answered Ross' goal. Defenseman Ryan Sproul assisted Schumacher's goal. Shalla added a goal of his own at the 18:26 mark in the second period. Ross assisted the shot to one up the Greyhounds, the Greyhounds would respond quickly again as Schumacher answered to Shalla's goal to tie the game 4-4 at the end of the second period.
The beginning of the third period was an even battle amongst the two teams. Terry Trafford would score his second goal of the season at 10:36 to one-up the Greyhounds. Defenseman Brandon Archibald and left-winger, Anthony Camara assisted Trafford's goal. Then, Shalla would notch the hat trick with less than a minute to play in the game to put the Spirit up 6-4 and that is how it would stay.
