Spirit complete series sweep with 4-1 win

August 28, 2006 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
North Shore Spirit News Release

Following what has been their recipe for success as of late, the Spirit rallied behind a great starting performance from Sam Smith and timely hitting from the offense for a 4-1 win on Monday night at Fraser field that completed the series sweep of the Tornadoes and extended their winning streak to nine games.

Although he would give the Spirit a solid start, Smith made an inauspicious debut on the Spirit mound surrendering hits to the first four batters that he faced. Josh Beauregard led off the game with a single, but was retired on a pickoff. Unfortunately for Smith, the next batter, Austin Wasserman, tripled and came around to score the game's first run on a double off the bat of Chris Colabello. Brian Rios followed that knock with a single, but with runners on first and third and just one out, Smith induced a 6-4-3 double play to escape the jam without further damage.

Smith settled down following the rocky first inning, and he kept the Tornadoes off the scoreboard for the rest of the contest. He pitched six innings, allowing just one run on seven hits to pick up his first victory in a Spirit uniform.

The North Shore offense staked Smith to the lead in bottom of the third inning and they never relinquished the advantage. Luis Sabino drew a walk to get things started and went from first to third on a double from Vic Davilla. Chris Rowan scored both with a double to center to put the Spirit ahead, 2-1. North Shore tacked on one more run in the inning, when Rowan crossed the plate on a passed ball.

North Shore would add one final run in the bottom of the eighth inning, loading the bases and then capitalizing on a Tornadoes' error.

One day after becoming the CanAm League all time single season leader, Kevin Fitzgerald set the Tornadoes down in order in the ninth to close out yet another Spirit victory.

The Spirit hit the road for the remainder of the season, closing out 2006 with back-to-series in Quebec and Worcester. The Spirit don't return to Fraser Field until September 6th and 7th when they host the fourth-seeded playoff qualifier in first-round postseason play. Tickets for both games are on sale now at the Spirit box office, online at www.northshorespirit.com, or over the phone at 781-592-0007.
