
New Haven County sweeps Pride

New Haven County Cutters News Release
(Nashua, NH, Aug. 28, 2006) New Haven pitching prevailed in both ends of Monday night's twin bill at Historic Holman as the County Cutters completed a sweep of the Nashua Pride, 7-1 and 4-1 before a crowd of 1,907 on Glenn Murray Appreciation Night.
The Pride (22-17, 39-42) could manage only one hit in the second game of the doubleheader off three New Haven County pitchers. Courtney Hall (4-4) went the first five and one-third innings to record his fourth win. He allowed a first inning single to Nashua's Jayson Bass. Hall was relieved by Cory Willey who got the final two outs of the sixth inning. Andy Weimer pitched a perfect seventh inning to record his 18th save of the season.
The County Cutters (22-17, 47-37) scored all the runs they would need in the first inning off Nashua starter and loser Jason Paul (2-2) when DH Derrick Gibson stroked a two-run double to left-centerfield. Horace Lawrence belted a two-run homer in the sixth for New Haven County, his fifth of the season.
Nashua's only run came in the sixth when Tom Creighton scored a on Sean Dobson RBI ground ball which was booted by second baseman Jose Delgado allowing Dobson to reach base. Earlier in the day, Dobson was named the Can-Am League's "Batter of the Week".
In the first game, Jeremy Terni and Gibson each hit two-run homers to power the County Cutters to victory. New Haven starter Rolando Valles (8-5) went five strong innings to earn his eighth win. Jarrad Lavergne (4-7), the first of three Nashua pitchers suffered the loss.
Larry Bethea drove home the only Pride run in the opener with an RBI single in the first inning.
The Pride now embarks on a seven-game road trip to end the regular season. Nashua will play three games in Little Falls, New Jersey starting Tuesday night against the New Jersey Jackals. The Pride will spend the Labor Day weekend in New Haven for a four-game series with the County Cutters.
The scheduled Nashua starters for the series in New Jersey are Dan Reichert (RHP, 8-5, 4.04), Josh Stevens (RHP, 4-2, 4.33) and Mark Hamilton (LHP, 9-5, 4.34).
