Spirit Begin Eastern Swing in Barrie Thursday Night

Barrie, Ont. - The Saginaw Spirit (37-13-0-1) visit the Barrie Colts (21-25-3-0) on Thursday, February 15th, at the Sadlon Arena.

Last Time:

Saginaw traveled north to take on the Soo Greyhounds on Sunday, February 11th, at the GFL Memorial Gardens. The Spirit defeated the Hounds, 3-0, in their first shutout of the season. The Spirit jumped out to an early 2-0 score in the first with goals coming from Owen Beck and Soo native Calem Mangone. Josh Bloom scored on an empty net to give Saginaw the win. Andrew Oke started in net for Saginaw saving all 22 shots for his first OHL shutout.

The Barrie Colts welcomed the Kingston Frontenacs to the Sadlon Arena on Saturday, February 10th. The Colts had a 4-0 lead the majority of the game with goals coming from Zach Wigle, Blair Scott, and Beau Jelsma who scored two in the second period. Jax Dubois scored two goals for the Frontenacs, but the Colts ultimately won 4-3. Ben West started in net for Barrie saving 43 of 46 shots.

This Season:

The Saginaw Spirit last faced off against the Barrie Colts on February 3rd at the Dow Event Center in a game that eventually went into overtime. Hunter Haight had the first goal of the game, scoring on his former team. Zayne Parekh scored early in the second before Beau Jelsma answered for Barrie. Cole Beaudoin and Riley Patterson scored in the third period to gain their first lead of the night, but Alex Christopoulos scored late in the third to force OT. Matyas Sapovaliv scored the game winning goal to give the Spirit a 4-3 victory. Saginaw's Nolan Lalonde stopped 19 of 22 shots, while Barrie's Sam Hillebrandt saved 36 of 40 shots.

Players to Watch

Celebrating his 18th birthday, Zayne Parekh currently leads Saginaw in points (74) and assists (49). Parekh is three points behind Patrick McNeill for the most in a single season by a Spirit defenseman (77 points, 2005-06). He, along with Owen Beck and Michael Misa lead the team with 25 goals. Andrew Oke leads in all major goaltending categories for the Spirit, including 2.97 goals against average (GAA), third in the OHL, an .891 save percentage (SV%), and 22 wins. Nolan Lalonde continues his franchise record winning streak, now at 14 games.

Beau Jelsma leads the Colts in points (55), assists (32) and is tied with Cole Beaudoin for most goals (23). Beaudoin has scored a team-leading 11 powerplay goals, three shorthanded goals, and four game winning goals. Rookie Riley Patterson is tied for second among OHL Rookies in points (45), totaling 18 goals and 27 assists. Sam Hillebrandt leads in all major goaltending categories for Barrie, including 3.55 GAA, a .904 SV%, and 11 wins with one shutout. Ben West is the OHL's reigning goaltender of the week.

Saginaw currently has ten (10) players tied to the National Hockey League (NHL), including Joey Willis (Nashville), Josh Bloom (Vancouver), Matyas Sapovaliv (Vegas), Hunter Haight (Minnesota), Owen Back (Montreal), Ethan Hay (Tampa Bay), Braden Haché (Florida), Jorian Donovan (Ottawa), Rodwin Dionicio (Anaheim) and Nolan Lalonde (Columbus, FA).
