
Spirit Beat Spitfires 5-4

(Saginaw, MI) - The Spirit earned two points with a 5-4 victory over the Windsor Spitfires in front of a sold-out crowd at the Dow Event Center. The Spirit move their record to 29-17-0-2 and remain in second place in the OHL West Division, seven points back of the division leading Plymouth Whalers. "It was a good win", stated Spirit General Manager and Head Coach Bob Mancini.
The Spirit opened the scoring at the 6:22 mark of the first period. Center Ryan McDonough was able to bank the puck off of Windsor goaltender Andrew Engelage from the side of the net and the puck snuck over the goal line. D-man Nick Crawford and center Cody Bass (OTT 05) assisted. The period ended with the Spirit holding a 1-0 advantage.
The second period saw a flurry of scoring, with the Spirit and Spitfires trading goals twice. Right winger Ryan Berard scored the first goal of the period :15 seconds in. Forwards Tyler Haskins and Patrick Asselin assisted. Spits left winger Bradley Snetsinger put Windsor on the board at the 3:55 mark in the second, taking the score to 2-1. Center Tom Pyatt (NYR 05) advanced the Spirit lead to 3-1 with a goal at the 11:02 in the second assisted by winger Jan Mursak (DET 06) and d-man Mitch Maunu. Windsor cut the lead to a single goal at the 15:33 mark. Snetsinger fired a shot from the center of the face-off circle to the left of Spirit goaltender Ryan Daniels (OTT 06). Snetsinger would notch a hat trick with another goal, scoring with :49 seconds to play in the second, when he snapped a shot to the back of the net. The Spirit quickly answered, retaking the lead :27 seconds later. Center Ryan O'Marra (NYI 05) batted the puck out of the air in front of the net over the left shoulder of Engelage, giving the Spirit a 4-3 lead heading into the second intermission. Bass and Haskins assisted.
Windsor scored a shorthanded goal at the 10:22 mark of the third period. Defenseman Keith Wynn joined the rush to give the Spitfires a 3-on-2, snapping the puck over the blocker of Daniels. The shorthanded marker tied the game at 4-4. A goal from Pyatt would seal the Spirit lead at 16:39 in the third when he shot in a lose puck in front of the net. The power play goal, assisted by O'Marra and Bass, gave the Spirit a 5-4 victory.

Tuesday the city of Saginaw and the Dow Event Center will host the OHL Skills Competition and on Wednesday will host the OHL All-Star Game, presented locally by the Dow Chemical Company.
