Vermont Lake Monsters News Release
LOWELL, MA --- The Lowell Spinners scored 13 runs on 14 hits over the first three and one-third innings for a 13-1 lead, then watched the Expos score seven runs in the top of the seventh before beating Vermont 14-8 in New York-Penn League action Sunday evening at LeLacheur Park.
After the Expos scored an unearned run in the top of the first, the Spinners scored four runs on five hits in the bottom of the inning off Vermont starter Dan Generelli (0-1) for a 4-1 lead. Lowell added a run on one hit in the second off Generelli, then scored two in the third and six more in the fourth off reliever Jim Henderson to build the 13-1 lead.
The 13th run scored on a double from Robert Evans off Anthony Pearson, making his first relief appearance of the season. The double was the 14th hit given up by the three Expos pitchers, but Lowell would get just one more hit, a solo home run in the eighth, over the last 4.2 innings off of Pearson and Carlos Caceres.
Trailing 13-1, the Expos were able to score a season-high seven runs in the seventh inning. Tim Sweeney, Lorvin Louisa and Jason Tuttle each had RBI doubles to score three runs, then Vermont added another run on an error for a 13-5 Lowell advantage. Then with the bases loaded, Kory Casto hit the Expos fourth double of the inning to score all three baserunners to cut the deficit to 13-8.
While Vermont batters had four doubles in the seventh, Lowell hitters had seven doubles for the game. The seven two-baggers set a new Expos single-game record for doubles by an opponent, breaking the record of six set on five different occassions (all at Centennial Field).
Pearson, who was 0-7 and had walked 27 batters in his 12 innings pitched as a starter, allowed just the one double with one strikeout over 2.2 innings, while Caceres gave up just the solo home run in two innings. Arthur Santos (1-2) allowed just one unearned run on six hits over the first five innings to get the win for Lowell.
Evans was 3-for-4 with two runs, two doubles and two RBI to lead the Spinners, while Jim Buckley was 3-for-5 with two runs, one double and two RBI. Lowell also got two hits, two doubles and two RBI from Jeremy West, while Jason Ramos two hits and three RBI.
The Expos had 11 hits in a game for the third time in the last five games, four of last seven and 5 of last nine. Tuttle was 2-for-5 with two runs scored to extend his hitting streak to eight games (11x34), while Louisa was 2-for-4 with a run and RBI to extend his hitting streak to seven games (9x24) and is now hitting .203 overall after batting .091 on July 4th.
Vermont, 7-33 overall and 1-19 on the road, will try and snap its seven-game losing streak with the final contest of a three-game series at Lowell on Monday night with Clint Everts on the mound for the Expos.
