LOWELL, MA - According to a variety of media outlets a U.S. spy satellite the size of a mini-van is falling rapidly towards earth and is expected to reach the earth's atmosphere at the end of February or the first week of March. No one knows where the satellite will land.

The Spinners will use the falling satellite to raise money for Lowell Spinners Charities and the Joann Weber Charitable Fund.

There are 194 countries (according to about.com) and four oceans (Pacific, Atlantic, Indian and the Artic) where the satellite could land on earth. There is also the possibility it will never reach earth or the U.S. could shoot the satellite down. Taking those possibilities into account there are 200 different options.

The Spinners will raffle off 200 slots at $10 each and fans can enter as many times as possible until all 200 slots have been filled. On Tuesday, February 26th the Spinners will randomly assign each entry a country, ocean, the satellite never makes it to earth or it is shot down.

The winner will receive $1,000 and a chance to throw out a first pitch at a Spinners game being recognized as the Falling Satellite winner.

Fans can enter by visiting the Lowell Spinners souvenir store (Mon - Fri 11 a.m. - 3 p.m.), by visiting lowellspinners.com or by calling 978-805-5106.

"It's not every day a satellite falls from space, so we have decided to raise some money for charity," said Lowell Spinners General Manager Tim Bawmann. "We also realize the chances of this falling satellite causing harm or damage to anyone is very slim - we just hope it does not land in our centerfield. Whenever we get a chance to have some fun and give back to the community, we are all about it."

Since about 70% of the earth's surface is covered by ocean, many experts believe if the satellite survives as it enters the earth's atmosphere it will land in water.
