Lowell Spinners News Release
BROOKLYN, NY - Twice the Lowell Spinners fought back to tie things up in Game Two of Wednesday's double header with the Brooklyn Cyclones, but ultimately the Cyclones earned a split when the Cyclones took advantage of a Nick Moore error in the eighth inning to top Lowell, 3-2, at MCU Park.
After winning the first game of the double header, the Spinners tread water with the Cyclones in the Wild Card race, though they missed a key opportunity to gain ground on the Wild Card leading Connecticut Tigers, who were swept by the Staten Island Yankees. As a result, the Yankees moved a half game ahead of the Spinners in the chase for the post-season with the Spinners now two games back.
Brooklyn (31-28) broke through in the bottom half of the first inning. Amed Rosario doubled with one out and took third on a single by Michael Conforto. Jhoan Urena followed with a single through the hole at short, giving the Cyclones a 1-0 lead, before Reed Reilly induced a pop-out and short fly to end the inning.
Lowell (28-30) pulled even in the third inning. Raymel Flores got things started with a one-out bunt single, taking second on a throwing error by catcher Tomas Nido. Danny Mars followed with a double to right, plating Flores and evening the score at one.
The Cyclones responded in the bottom half of the inning. John Mora led off the inning with a bunt single and moved to second when Alixon Suarez's attempted pick-off play went awry. He remained there until Nido redeemed himself for his error with a two-out single, plating Mora and putting the Spinners in a 2-1 hole.
The Spinners tied things up again in the sixth inning. Danny Mars led off the inning with a single and moved to third when Betts reached on an error by Urena. Aneudis Peralta followed with a single to left, scoring Mars, tying the score at two. After Joe Oliver went to his bench for pinch-hitter Mauricio Dubon, a single loaded the bases, but Moore grounded into a 6-4-3 double play to end the threat.
The Cyclones won the game in the eighth after Rosario led off the inning with a double. After making a great catch on a sinking liner from Mauricio Dubon to end the top half of the eighth inning, Conforto hit a shallow pop to left that Moore overran, moving Rosario to third. The Spinners opted not to load the bases, rather bringing the infield in and Urena lined a single to right to give Brooklyn a walk-off win.
Reilly started for the Spinners and used a pair of double play balls to work around eight hits over his five innings of work. He allowed two runs without walking a batter, striking out one. Mario Alcantara (1-3, 8.31) came on in relief and worked around a leadoff walk in the sixth with the help of another double play. He worked a clean seventh but was undone in the eighth after a leadoff single was compounded by the Moore error, suffering the loss by allowing just the unearned run on two hits and a walk in two plus innings, striking out three.
The two teams conclude the three game set Thursday at 7pm when Kevin McAvoy (0-2, 3.31) gets the ball for the Spinners.
