State College Spikes News Release
UNIVERSITY PARK - The State College Spikes (29-27) topped the Jamestown Jammers by the score of 3-0 in a rain-shortened affair on Monday evening. As a thank you to the fans who braved the elements and saw State College win the first game of the scheduled twin bill, the Spikes will honor all tickets for Monday's game as a $3.00 coupon for any remaining 2007 regular season game. The second game of the double header will be made up later in the week with the Spikes playing as the home team when they take on the Jammers in Jamestown.
With weather threatening to interfere with the game later in the evening, the Spikes wasted no time getting on the scoreboard. Keanon Simon started the first inning rally with a single and a stolen base before coming around to score on an Andrew Walker RBI single that opened the scoring for the Spikes. After another single from Bobby Spain moved Walker into scoring position, he came around to score on a fielding error by Jamestown's Lucas Water to push the State College lead to 2-0.
After a scoreless top of the second inning, the Spikes continued to rally in the bottom of the frame. Austin McClune singled and stole his fourteenth bag of the season to get into scoring position and moved to third on a groundout before the game was halted for the first time due to rain. After a 21-minute rain delay, the first pitch from Jamestown starter Alex Sanabia was wild and allowed McClune to score from third and give State College the 3-0 advantage.
That would be more than enough offense in the rain-shortened game as Spikes starter Moises Robles (4-7) scattered two hits over his five innings of work to win his third straight. Robles has now allowed only one earned run over his last 21.1 innings of work. Daniel Moskos relieved Robles in the sixth and had the bases loaded with nobody out when the second rain delay of the evening began. Because the half inning was not completed the events of the top of the sixth do not count and the game is officially a 3-0 win in five innings for State College.
The Spikes will head to Batavia tomorrow evening for the first of two with the Muckodgs beginning at 7:05 p.m. RHP Matt Foust (2-4) will make the start for State College. After a pair in Batavia and three in Jamestown, the Spikes will return to Medlar Field at Lubrano Park on Saturday for a quick two game set with the Williamsport Crosscutters.
