Spikes Use Surge in Sixth to Come Back and Top Crosscutters, 9-5

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The State College Spikes put a dent in the Williamsport Crosscutters' MLB Draft League first-half title hopes with a five-run sixth inning as they came from behind to defeat the Crosscutters, 9-5, on Thursday night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.

With the win, the Spikes (18-18) notched their sixth consecutive win and put Williamsport (20-16) into second place in the MLB Draft League first-half standings, one game back of the West Virginia Black Bears with two games remaining in the half. West Virginia also holds the head-to-head tiebreaker over the Crosscutters.

Trailing 5-4 entering the inning, State College delivered five hits in the sixth, including four for extra bases. Ty Hill got the inning started with a triple to right field, then scored the tying run on Keshawn Ogans's sacrifice fly to center.

After Ben Columbus flied out, Luke Seidel delivered a triple to left-center field. Jordan Williams then walked to set up Lyndon Weaver's RBI single to center. Kevin Karstetter and Will Simpson followed with back-to-back run-scoring doubles to finish the outburst.

State College had earlier used the big inning to take the lead in the second. With the bases empty and two outs, Hill walked, Ogans singled and Columbus walked to load them up for Seidel, who drew a walk. After a wild pitch brought in Ogans, Williams reached on an error that plated two more runs for a four-run frame.

Mark Adamiak (1-1) tossed two scoreless innings of relief to pick up the win. Adamiak yielded one hit and one walk while notching one strikeout in the effort.

Williamsport reliever Colin Kennedy (0-1) took the loss after allowing five runs on four hits and a walk over 2/3 of an inning.

The Spikes now finish the first half of the 2022 MLB Draft League schedule with consecutive games at Muncy Bank Ballpark at Historic Bowman Field against the Crosscutters. Friday's 6:35 p.m. matchup will feature the last start of the half for defending MLB Draft League Pitcher of the Week Mason Olson (2-0), who has posted a league-best 0.33 ERA and racked up 13 straight scoreless innings for State College. Williamsport has not yet determined a starting pitcher for Friday.

Following the first half of the MLB Draft League season, the league will take a break for the MLB Draft itself, taking place in Los Angeles starting on Sunday, July 17 during MLB All-Star Break before the second half begins on Friday, July 22.
