Trenton Thunder News Release

(Trenton, NJ) - The Thunder returned home after more than a week away from Trenton Thunder Ballpark looking to close out the first half of the season strong before the All-Star break. With nine losses in their first 12 meetings against the Frederick Keys, Trenton played one of their smoothest games of the season before a crowd of 5,665 on Thursday night. Two out triples from Caleb McNeely and Jeff Manto provided all the offense in the third and four pitchers combined on a 3-0 shutout to get the Thunder (18-18) back to .500. Unfortunately, they found out after the game that they were eliminated from the first half championship with West Virginia's (21-15) 3-2 win over Mahoning Valley (15-22).

Both teams established the trend of leaving runners on base right away with Thunder starter Ronaldo Fernandez getting some help from his defense in the first. After a pair of walks, Carlos Guzman smoked a two out single into left field and Ryan McCarthy's throw to the plate nailed Dylan Hoy for the final out. In the home half, John Cristino started a two out rally with a double down the left field line before McCarthy snuck on with an infield single. Nik Galatas escaped trouble for the first time by getting McNeely to ground into a force out that retired the side.

In the third, Andrew Cossetti picked up the first of his three singles with a lined shot into left center. Cristino followed with his second hit and with two outs it was McNeely who opened the scoring with a high drive into right center for a triple and a 2-0 lead. Three pitches later, Manto cracked his first triple of the season into right for his tenth run batted in and a 3-0 Thunder edge.

Fernandez battled through his final inning in the fourth, walking the bases loaded before a strikeout of number nine hitter Henriadam Brower. He then got ahead of Hoy 0-2 and induced a flyout to end his outing, allowing just two hits while striking out four.

In his home debut, Christian Capuano (1-0) had a busy three innings in relief, getting a double play to retire the side 1-2-3 in the sixth. Then in the seventh he ended up with three strikeouts, fanning Alex Baeza with two runners on base to keep the 3-0 lead intact. DJ Wilkinson also got a double play to face the minimum in the eighth and Hunter Waldis' first appearance ended in a save to cap off the first game of the series. The Thunder finished with 12 hits and 14 left on base as Cossetti, Cristino, McCarthy, and McNeely all finished with multi-hit games.

The Thunder and Keys continue their series with the middle game on Friday, July 15th at 7:00 PM. Our Jersey Pork Roll Cooler Bag goes to the first 1,000 fans ages 18 & older, presented by Case's Pork Roll! It's also our 2nd Scout Night with a Postgame Scout Sleepover.
