Spikes squander late lead in loss

NILES, OH - A one-run lead was all the Mahoning Valley Srappers needed to ensure victory Monday night at Eastwood Field, as they beat the State College Spikes 8-7.

The Spikes (13-48) jumped out on top early Monday night, scoring three runs in the second inning. After Kyle Morgan and Quincy Latimore roped back-to-back singles, Mark Carver loaded the bases with a single to left field. David Rubinstein then cleared the bases with a three-run double to right field, giving the Spikes a three run lead.

Mahoning Valley (27-37) came back, scoring a run in the third and adding two more in the fourth. The Spikes again took the lead in the fifth, scoring four runs on two hits and two errors.

The Spikes lead was short lived, with the Scrappers adding a four-run inning of their own in the sixth. A one-run lead was all the Scrappers needed to ensure a victory Monday night. Neither team scored for the remaining innings.

Yoffri Martinez (2-5) took the loss for State College, pitching two innings and allowing five runs on seven hits.

Jammers' Austin Creps (2-3) walked away with the win for Jamestown after pitching two innings. Creps allowed four runs on two hits in the outing.

The Spikes will travel to Jamestown tomorrow for a three game series against the Jammers. Tomorrow the two teams will play a double header beginning at 5:05 p.m. to make up the June 17th game that was postponed due to rain. All the action can be heard on the Spikes Radio Network, 95.3/3WZ, with the pre-game show beginning at 4:50 p.m.
