State College Spikes News Release

STATE COLLEGE - The State College Spikes tied a team record with 20 hits, including the first career home run for Matt Curry, and jumped on Vermont Lake Monsters pitching early and often to produce a 13-2 victory on Monday night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.

A crowd of 4,194 joined 414 dogs for Bob's Bark in the Park, hosted by Bob the Baseball Dog, and witnessed State College (13-11) begin the fireworks early with a four-run first inning against Vermont (17-7) starter Matt Swynenberg (2-1), capped by Pat Irvine's two-run double. The Spikes then touched Swynenberg for two more runs in the second, chasing the Lake Monsters ace from the mound after just two innings. Swynenberg entered the game with a 0.41 ERA, which increased by over two points to 2.62 by the time his outing ended.

Curry's homer, a solo shot to right field in the seventh inning, was one of his four hits in the game to go along with his four runs batted in. Kelson Brown also ended the game with four hits, one off of the Spikes team record, to lead the Spikes' offensive barrage. Adalberto Santos delivered the record-tying 20th hit of the game to knock in a run in the eighth, and went 3-for-4 with three RBI's total in the game.

State College finished with six extra base hits, including five doubles, helping them to a series-clinching victory over the team with the New York-Penn League's best record. Four other Spikes had multi-hit games in the record effort.

Mitch Fienemann (3-1) notched the win in relief for State College, pitching two scoreless innings and striking out two after following starter Zac Fuesser. Fuesser allowed just one run on four hits and a walk while striking out four over four innings.

Swynenberg allowed a total of six runs on nine hits and a walk in his two innings of work to draw the loss for Vermont. The right-hander also struck out one.

Tuesday, it's a special afternoon game at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park, as the Spikes and Lake Monsters meet at noon to finish their three-game set. State College will send right-hander Tyler Waldron (0-1) to the mound. Waldron went a season-high five innings last time out, but took the loss at Brooklyn on Thursday. Vermont will respond with right-hander Shane McCatty. McCatty, the son of former major league pitcher Steve McCatty, went 2 1/3 scoreless innings in his last start at Mahoning Valley on Thursday.

It will also be wet and wild when the ballpark turns into a waterpark on Super Splash Day, presented by 93.7 FM The Bus. Swimming pools, sprinklers, a dunk tank, and an Alpha Fire Company fire truck will be just some of the ways kids can enjoy the action in the last afternoon game on the 2010 Spikes home schedule. Plus, fans can enjoy Central PA's Best Family Value with $1 Outfield Bleacher seats on Buck Bleacher Tuesday.
