State College Spikes News Release
WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. - The State College Spikes got big hits from Marques Paige and Kenny Piper as part of a furious comeback attempt, but an early deficit was too much as the Williamsport Crosscutters took a 5-3 victory on Saturday night at Muncy Bank Ballpark at Historic Bowman Field.
Paige tripled in the Spikes' (11-16) first two runs of the game in the eighth inning off Williamsport (14-12) reliever Sean Ross, who was making his first appearance of the season. Following a pitching change, Piper hammered a double down the left-field line to score Paige and close the deficit to two runs.
In the ninth, the Spikes twice brought the go-ahead run to the plate, but a fielder's choice and a game-ending groundout stifled their hopes to complete the rally.
Mark Vierling continued his stretch of success in Williamsport. After homering Friday, the brother of former Crosscutter and current Phillie Matt Vierling notched two more hits on Saturday, one of them a double.
The Crosscutters built a 5-0 lead through three innings, all on runs scored with two outs. In the second, Jaxon Shirley tripled home Williamsport's initial tally, followed by a run-scoring double for Dusty Stroup and an RBI single from Brittan Kittle. Isaac Nunez brought home the last two Crosscutters markers with a single in the third. Nunez also stole two bases in the game.
State College starter Chase Watkins took the loss after allowing five runs on seven hits, a walk and two hit batsmen over 3 2/3 innings. Watkins struck out five batters in the effort.
Reliever Tyler Uberstine (1-1) grabbed the win for Williamsport with three scoreless, hitless frames. Uberstine gave up just one walk while recording five strikeouts.
Max Loven (1) replaced Ross on the mound in the eighth and earned a six-out save. Loven yielded two hits and a walk while striking out two batters.
Sunday, the Spikes and Crosscutters finish up their three-game set at Muncy Bank Ballpark at Historic Bowman Field with a 5:05 p.m. matchup. Left-hander Connor Oliver (0-1) and right-hander Jason Bollman (0-0) will team up in a "piggyback" setup to take the mound for State College, while Williamsport will send right-hander Troy Taylor (2-0) to the hill.
Following the series in Williamsport and an off day on Monday, the Spikes are set to welcome back the Mahoning Valley Scrappers for a three-game series at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park starting on Tuesday.
