State College Spikes News Release
STATE COLLEGE, PA-Jamestown's Kevin Mattison snapped a tie game with an RBI double in the top of the ninth to tag State College with another one-run defeat, 7-6, at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park Thursday night.
Jamestown (35-23) had two previous chances at breaking the game open in the seventh and eighth innings. But State College (11-46), led by reliever Alan Knotts, allowed Jamestown just one run from a bases-loaded, no-out situation in the seventh, and no runs from a bases-loaded, one-out situation in the eighth.
The Spikes came back from two runs down in the seventh to force a 6-6 tie. After Jamestown's Kedrick Martin issued walks to Chad Rice and Butch Biela, Chase d'Arnaud doubled to left-center to drive them both in with the tying runs, setting up the ninth inning.
Mark Carver hit his first professional home run for the Spikes to put them ahead, 4-2, in the fourth inning. Carver hit the ball to the Picnic Pavilion behind the left field fence of Medlar Field at Lubrano Park, where 3,288 saw Thursday's game.
Jamestown came back to take the lead with three runs in the fifth, and then scored another from the bases-loaded situation in the seventh to take the lead, 6-4.
D'Arnaud ended the game 2-for-5 with a double and three runs batted in. Rice also contributed two hits, two runs scored, and a stolen base.
The defeat was the tenth straight for the Spikes, as well as their tenth straight defeat in a one-run game. Seven of the ten loses in the Spikes' current losing string have been by a single run.
The Spikes were the beneficiaries of good defense in the game, though. State College's Butch Biela threw out the Jammers' Brandon Turner at the plate in the third inning to complete a double play.
Brandon Todd (3-2) earned the win for Jamestown, holding the Spikes off of the board for the final 1.1 innings, allowing only a hit and a walk.
Yoffri Martinez (2-3) took the loss for the Spikes by allowing Mattison's tiebreaking double in the ninth inning. Martinez also struck out one.
The Spikes and Jammers face off at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park Friday night at 7:05 PM. State College sends right-hander Brian Leach (1-1) to the mound to face Jamestown lefty Wade Korpi (5-1).
The night skies will light up after the game with FIREWORKS presented by the Galliker Dairy Company, and kids will get the chance to stay over at the park with the Scout Night Sleepover.
Catch all the action on flagship station 3WZ at 95.3 FM and the Spikes Radio Network starting at 6:35 with the Spikes GameDay Show, live from Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.
