BURLINGTON, VT --- Mitch Abeita's two-out RBI single in the top of the 10th inning gave the Staten Island a 5-4 extra-innings victory over the Vermont Lake Monsters in New York-Penn League action Thursday night at historic Centennial Field.

With pinch runner Jahdiel Santamaria on second with two outs, Abeita lined a 2-1 pitch from Steven Stewart into left field for his second RBI single of the night. The victory was the eighth straight win for Staten Island (39-21), including four consecutive victories over the Lake Monsters.

The Yankees had jumped on top 3-1 with three runs in the top of the fourth. Dan Brewer had an RBI double in the inning to tie the game 1-1, while Abeita had an RBI single to cap off the three-run inning.

Vermont tied the game 3-3 in the fifth inning as Dani Arias singled, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on a two-out Steve Souza RBI single. Souza then stole second and scored on a RBI single by Danny Espinoza, who was 2-for-3 on the night and is now 7-for-9 in his three games with the Lake Monsters.

Staten Island retook the lead in the sixth on a Jack Rye solo home run off starter Patrick Arnold, who allowed four runs (two earned) on five hits with two walks and nine strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings. Vermont tied the game 4-4 in the seventh when Jake Smolinski doubled with two outs and scored all the way from second on a wild pitch.

Jason Kiley (2-1) tossed two scoreless innings of relief for the win, while Pat Venditte a 1-2-3 ninth inning for his 17th save of the season. Venditte is a ambidexerous pitcher who retired right-handed batters Derek Norris and Michael Guerrero while throwing right-handed, then got left-handed batter Jake Dugger to pop up for the final out of the game while pitching left-handed.

Stewart (2-2) allowed a run on three hits in two innings for his second straight loss to the Yankees, while Dugger was 2-for-4 with a run scored and a double. Brian Baisley went 3-for-5 for Staten Island, while Dan Brewer had two doubles and Rye two runs scored.

Vermont (23-35), which has now lost six straight games to fall 12 games under .500, host Staten Island in the second game of the three-game series on Friday night with Brad Peacock scheduled to start for the Lake Monsters.
