State College Spikes News Release
The State College Spikes lost both games of a double header to the Vermont LakeMonsters on Sunday, falling in game one 3-0 and in the finale 4-3. The losses dropped the Spikes to 12-8 and moved them into second place in the Pinckney Division, 1.5 games behind the Auburn Doubledays.
After being shutout in game one of the doubleheader, the Spikes wasted no time getting on the scoreboard in the nightcap. Keonon Simon reached on a fielding error to start the rally, and later came around to score on an RBI double off the bat of Justin Byler. Later in the inning, another LakeMonster miscue lead to a second run as a wild pitch allowed Byler to score from third to give the Spikes a 2-0 edge.
The State College lead grew in the fourth inning when Michael Ambrose started the inning with a triple and later came around to score on a Daniel Rios RBI single. But Vermont would answer in a big way in the bottom of the fifth as Garrett Bass smashed a one-out grand slam to give the LakeMonsters the 4-3 lead after five.
In the seventh inning, the Spikes last turn at-bat, Smelin Perez started the inning with a line-drive single and moved to third on a stolen base and throwing error, but Matt Cavagnaro, Austin McClune and James Barksdale all struck out with the tying run 90-feet away and Vermont took the nightcap 4-3.
Brian Tracy (2-1) suffered the loss for the Spikes after allowing the decisive home run in the bottom of the fifth.
State College will look to salvage the finale of the three-game series against the LakeMonsters tomorrow evening at 7:05 p.m before taking advantage of a league wide off-day on Tuesday. The Spikes will return to Medlar Field at Lubrano Park on Wednesday to open a six game homestand. The Spikes will welcome Oneonta to Happy Valley on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday before the Brooklyn Cyclones come to town for a three-game set starting on Saturday. Great seats are still available an can be purchased over the phone by calling 877-99-SPIKES, logging on to StateCollegeSpikes.com, or in person at the Medlar Field at Lubrano Park box office.
GAME ONE RECAP
The Spikes lost game one of a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon, falling to the Vermont LakeMonsters 3-0. Matt Foust (0-2) suffered the loss despite striking out nine through five innings. Both teams collected only five hits, but Vermont's base knocks came in critical situations, while the Spikes collected only singles in the losing effort.
Vermont scored twice in the first inning, as Bill Rhineheart and Sean Rooney each smashed RBI hits with two-outs to take the early lead. Rhineheart added another RBI single in the third to push the score to 3-0 and that is how the game would end.
Vermont's Glenn Gibson (2-0) got the win after tossing six impressive innings to pick up the win, allowing only five hits without a walk while striking out six. Gibson lowered his ERA to 0.82.
